Today I want to tell about how I managed to force my Android to display Ancient Greek normally. Yes, Ancient Greek, but not just Greek. The standard Android-font supports modern Greek characters. We need display of diacritical signs, and also archaic characters like cops, digamma, samp etc.

Problem essence

Unfortunately, function of change of fonts is not provided in the Android operating system which is famous for rich opportunities of customization. In any case, it so for the majority of firmwares. Therefore to install an own font on your device, a quantity of manipulations to which this article is devoted will be required.

If we want to read some Ancient Greek text, to our eyes very sad picture will appear:

All characters with diacritical signs, except characters with akuty (which is supported since it is used in modern Greek), were gone, on their place spaces are seen. It should be corrected urgently!

What font to select?

It is necessary to tell that information on the choice and installation of a font with support Ancient Greek has not enough, but in most cases advised to put the UbuntuMono font. However I did not want to change a usual Android-font of Latin and Cyrillics for the font Ubuntu, consuetudo est altera natura. Therefore the look stopped on Arial Unicode MS which is famous for support of diacritical characters, at the same time its Latin and Cyrillic fonts by sight do not differ from standard. In comments suggest to set Free Sans as more esthetic in respect of an Ancient Greek font, thank them for council!

The choice remains on your discretion, the pleasant font the .ttf format it is necessary to download on the device.

The application for change of a font

The easiest way to change a font on your device — to put for this purpose a special application. In my opinion, the most convenient and universal of them — HiFont. However, convenient and intuitively clear version — not the latest, 5.0.2. It can be downloaded on Mobogenie. The further installation instruction will concern this version.

Before installation of fonts it is strongly recommended to receive the root-rights. On this subject there is a mass of articles, here good article on Geektimes.

Downloaded, set!

Here HiFont suggested me to change "the Chinese font". As Arial Unicode MS supports many languages, did not refuse an opportunity. It is optional to be limited to an Ancient Greek font, the more the better. I tick off:
