Speaking about next big thing, people never think really largely. And business at all not in absence of imagination. A problem more likely in a lack of observation. Actually, the future always is rather close that it could be made out. The future already here, and it does not need to be thought out.
What tell most of all today about? Certainly, about the Internet of things to which carry (by right or not) almost everything that 1) is connected with communications the machine machine (machine-to-machine or m2m); 2 is) based on computer calculations and networks of the sensors collecting data of different character; 3) mobile, virtual and residing in touch; and 4) urged to make everything that surrounds us, from streetlights and to industrial facilities, "smart".
What means, "people do not think really largely"? In talk it is paid to m2m-communications, communication of machines (devices) with other machines (devices) too much attention. But devices it is only the tool, something tangible that executes a certain feature set or actions. And when we speak about "smart devices", it is much more important that they are equipped with sensors.
The sensor is not the device. The sensor does not perform any operations in the same understanding in what it is done by the machine. Sensors measure, evaluate. In other words, collect data. A true essence of the Internet of things – in symbiosis of sensors and machines. That is this value of a phenomenon of the Internet of things consists in combining efforts of machines and sensors for collecting and interpretation of data. All possible information collected from all sensors of the world is possible if there is no infrastructure capable to analyze it in real time.
Cloudy applicaions have to be a key to it. Without them the Internet of things will not be able just to exist: there will be nobody to transfer collected data and to interpret them. Applications work for you everywhere and always.
To explain thought, we will give an example. In 2007 in Minnesota the bridge on the large highway collapsed that led to the numerous victims. It happened because steel structures could not sustain the raised loadings. If at construction of the bridge the smart cement containing the sensors capable to monitor loadings, emergence of cracks and deformations was used and to report about it in a data processing center, the tragedy could be avoided.
And such technologies can be applied not only at construction of bridges. The same sensors could recognize emergence of a sleet on a paving and on a wireless communication to report about it to your car via the on-board computer. That, in turn, will inform on it the driver and will suggest to reduce speed and if the driver does not follow advice, will make it automatically. Thus sensors in concrete interact with machine in the car, transferring information to action. And it is only one example of the message a sensor machine and the machine machine.
It is easy to provide that it can give. What will be if smart cars communicate among themselves through smart system of regulation of the movement of the city? We will receive optimization of a traffic – traffic lights will work not on the preset algorithms, and taking into account the current road situation. Drivers will obtain up-to-date information about load of streets and road conditions, and will be able or independently to make a decision on use of routes of a detour, or to be guided by hints of the computer of the car or smart road signs and information displays.
So, we have sensors tracing the most different parameters, there are cloudy applicaions providing processing and transfer of collected data from the machine to the machine and we have mobile devices with a response in real time. Our bridges became smart bridges, cars – smart cars. In line smart cities and so on.
But what we will receive from this benefit? What advantage? What industries can affect these changes?
Now we approach the answer to a question that means "to think on large". It is important to understand what put not only in what we will benefit. Business at all not in bridges and even not in the cities. It is about huge, fundamental shift. Doing things reasonable, we create a source for creation of absolutely new products and services.
Among all technology trends of the present, the Internet of things, perhaps, is the most important. It will change cardinally our world. In the next 5 years the greatest number of opportunities of growth and development of all our society will lie exactly here. And how great opportunities wait for us, it is worth talking separately.
