As well as the form for the improved multi-touch trackpad, the description of this concept occupies 80 pages and is partially attributed to Wayne Uesterman (Wayne Westerman) from Fingerworks, the company absorbed by Apple a few years ago for the purpose of release of iPhone and input devices of new generation.
The form signed on July 30, 2007 with a set of different names illustrates the conceptual device which includes different types of input, without mixing them among themselves. For this purpose the strong pressure or the movement of muscles is not required.
"First of all, it has to be perceived by the user as not depending on the mode, that is the user should not use specific signals for switching as, for example, clicking of keys, change of hands or capture of the stylus to replace an input method with another, – Uesterman writes — epidemiological researches confirmed that the repeating power pressure stimulates permanent injuries of muscles. Inconvenient poses, force for activation of the device, the excess movements and recurrence of actions have to be minimized for improvement of an erogonomika".
For this reason, the creator of the multi-touch mechanism, explained that the device with a surface of "multi-touch surface" which will correspond to idea of comfort and ergonomics during permanent use will be ideal application for its concept. It "will be equipped with tactile buttons or manual input so that the hand which is based upon a surface did not strain, and softly slid on it".
The surface will include electronic system which will provide to a number of sensors the image of the coming skin, and with such permission that the device will be able to distinguish different hands. It will allow the device to identify different parts of a hand during contact with a surface so combinations of fingers and provisions of hands for determination of different types of input will be distinguished" — Uesterman says.
One more benefit of a surface of "multi-touch" will become reliable work at rotation and scaling, as well as easy transition in management of several hands for the aid to navigation and a manipulation two-dimensional electronic documents. Moreover, it will be able to perform an inclination and scrolling without pressure from a hand, helping to operate three-dimensional applications, thus.
Uesterman reports that the surface will be rather large that on it both hands conveniently were placed, and is executed in that form which will promote reduction of pain of a forearm. Text entering, selection, scrolling and some multimedia functions will be similar to already existing options of Apple on iPhone and iPod touch. "In some applications the user can have a need to define – where to insert ink drawings and where – the interpreted characters – it is solved by means of guidance of the cursor — Uesterman continued — and though on a surface of "multi-touch" the user will be able to move the cursor, having left the manual letter and having just run a finger, it is more preferable to use the cursor, without closing a configuration of the manual letter. It can be performed due to the movement by the cursor by means of small pillows of fingers and external part of joints. And though the normal movements by the manual letter also mean sliding of fingers, the movements of a palm will be ignored systems until fingers are raised over a surface throughout several hundred milliseconds".
If the user uses the stylus to the letter, then its tip is read out by system as well as fingers.
