7 best scientific photos of 2015 according to Wired

1 year, 7 months ago
The Wired edition selected several best scientific photos for 2015. Under a cat — Pluto, Mars, the polluted river, a blue lava and other photos.

GallifordTry, the company developer of the Antarctic research station Halley VI, had no opportunities to check the work in actual practice so all hope was on computer simulation. And at them everything turned out: the station works since 2013. The certain building stands on hydraulic props which if necessary can be put on skis to move station. Skis are visible in this photo.

Copying of consciousness

1 year, 7 months ago
I want to think of such hypothetical opportunity near / far (to whom that is pleasant more) the future as loading of consciousness.

I read a lot of debate and reasonings on this subject on "Internet" therefore I have a small idea of to what views the different parties in this question adhere. And what problems confuse them. In this post I would like to sound briefly these questions and, whenever possible, to discuss.

At once I will make a reservation that I am not a specialist of any area connected with this question. I am not a neurobiologist, and not the researcher of artificial intelligence, and even not the mad experimenter with underground laboratory. I am a simple engineer of information systems who with variable success turns in IT and near-IT the sphere. Therefore all my reflections can be wrong.

Koreans found simple means for fight against Alzheimer's disease

1 year, 8 months ago

The group of the Korean scientists of several institutes which are going in for neuromedicine and researches of activity of a brain found the chemical eliminating symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and improving cognitive capabilities at mice. Substance mice were given, just dissolving it in water.

The preparation which made such surprising impact on a brain of mammals is a quite famous EPPS connection (or HEPPS — 3-[4-(2-Hydroxyethyl) - 1-piperazinyl] propanesulfonic acid). In biochemistry and biology it is used as the buffer solution saving acidity when adding in mix of acids or the bases.

The science did not set the reasons and course of Alzheimer's disease yet. Symptoms of an illness are frustration of short-term memory, violation of the speech and cognitive functions. It is known only that about 1% of cases of diseases occur for the genetic reasons. Alzheimer's disease – the most common cause of dementia.

Key feature of an illness — accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in brain tissues. While the scientists struggling with an illness are able to stop in certain cases formation of new proteinaceous plaques — but it was not possible to wash away already available plaques from a brain yet.

The neuronet defines a memorability of images

1 year, 8 months ago

You will forget this photo soon

Researchers from laboratory of computer sciences and artificial intelligence in Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed algorithm which defines a memorability of images. Moreover, on the basis of this algorithm the application for improvement of photos that they were properly pressed in a brain is created.

Which of the famous musicians poorly understands the theory of music

1 year, 8 months ago

Cortney Keykbin (Courtney Kakebeen): To answer this question, it is necessary to understand that "the great musician" means. Great often call Beatles. Undoubtedly, they were excellent authors of songs. Also they were very good musicians.

Whether there were they great? It is a controversial issue. It is necessary to consider several factors at once: to improvise a variety of styles, mastery, capability and creative approach to game in general.

There are musicians who reached such level without proper knowledge of the theory of music. My favourite example – Art Tatum. He was a blind person (could not read) and learned to play a piano itself until began to attend school for visually impaired where he began to study music.

Scientists established that magic mushrooms change consciousness from the first — and, seemingly, forever

Physicians from University medical school of Jones of Hopkins (USA) found out that after the first acceptance the consciousness is influenced not only by LSD, but also "magic mushrooms" which have active ingredient – a psilocybin. This opening became for scientists unexpected for several reasons.

Except that earlier it was not known of such strong and instant influence of a psilocybin on mentality of the person, notable change of a psychological portrait – for the adult a thing quite rare. At psychologists it is considered to be that character of the person stops being built up in 25-30 years then remains almost invariable. One recent research even claims that the main personal lines are found already in first graders.

"It is one of the early studies proving that character of the adult can be changed strongly", - Catherine McLean [Katherine MacLean], the candidate of science from the specified university claims.

At the same time scientists are inclined to believe that character changes not drug, but feelings and mystical experiences which it causes. Strong, transcendental feelings do not seem to people less bright because that they are called by a chemical irritant. The people polled by scientists claim that acceptance of the mentioned preparations became one of the strongest feelings in their life.

Abundant viewing of television and low physical activity at young age correlate with low cognitive function in 25 years, scientists from institute of researches and formation of Northern California, together with colleagues from university of California, etc. found out. Supervision over 3247 patients continued quarter of the century: from March 25, 1985 to August 31, 2011.

Australians work on condoms from hydrogel which can even be better, than nothing (18+)

The Australian engineers from University Wollongong work on a solution of one of the questions, major for mankind: why in a condom "feelings not those" and as to correct it. Using modern material hydrogel, they hope not only to get rid of unpleasant feelings, but even to reach effect at which it will be more pleasant to use hydrogel, than to work with au naturel. For exact determination of a difference in feelings scientists process results of reading of electromagnetic brain waves of examinees.

The first latex condoms appeared 100 years ago right after in the 1920th year latex was invented. Since then they underwent few changes though in other areas scientific progress considerably progressed. Despite an obvious positive effect in planning of birth rate and an obstacle of distribution of diseases, they have ardent opponents claiming about loss of pleasure and not really pleasant feelings from latex.

The first language defines linguistic capabilities of the person

1 year, 8 months ago
If till three years you spoke on Chinese, and then moved to France and began to communicate only in French, then you could forget the first language. But not your brain. Researchers from the Montreal neurologic institute at McGill's university found out that work of the neurons in a brain involved at speech processing depends on the very first language which was learned by the child. About influence of Russian and other languages of visual information not yet.

On this image the area which is used French-speaking at speech processing is shown by green color. Children who communicate on Chinese and French involve the areas illuminated by red. Activity of children who left China till three years and since then did not use a mother tongue, it is noted blue.
