Elbrus: from the past in the future

1 year, 5 months ago
Under the proud name "Elbrus" there was a series of supercomputers which was developed by the Soviet scientist Vsevolod Sergeyevich Burtsev (70-80th). These computers entered a number of innovations to the theory of computers, such as a superskalyarnost (processing more than one instruction for one clock period), implementation of the protected programming with hardware data types, parallel processing of several instructions. But their orientation to languages of the high level was the main feature of the Soviet supercomputers. The Soviet-American scientist Vladimir Mstislavovich Pentkovsky participating in development "Elbrus" created a high-level programming language Ale-76.

Except improvement of the sphere of the Soviet computers, the computer became base for creation of 64-bit universal microprocessors "Elbrus 4-C" and the next generation "Elbrus 8-C". They diluted the market of the American vendors of Intel, AMD and IBM. Local development and production of processors it was caused by requirement to find own solutions for the defense industry where use of domestic devices is more desirable.

George Martin writes books to WordStar 4.0 for MS-DOS

1 year, 5 months ago

George R. R. Martin, the author of a cycle of novels in a fantasy genre "A song of Ice and Fire", writes the books on very old computer – so old that that still works under control of the MS-DOS operating system. As a word-processor he uses the WordStar 4.0 program. J. Martin told about it, being on a visit at the TV host and showman Conan O'Brien.

Martin told that he uses two computers – one for modern needs, like the Internet, e-mail and other affairs, and another – only for work. At the same time it is pleasant to the writer that the old computer and the old program for editing texts are limited in opportunities. In particular, in WordStar there is no spell check.

"The program does all that is required from a word-processor, and does not do anything else, - he told. – I need no help. I hate these modern systems when you enter a lowercase letter, and they correct it on capital. I do not need capital! If I want to enter a capital letter, I would enter it. I am able to use Shift!".

Fraud upon second-hand purchase of Macbook Pro

1 year, 5 months ago
Today the acquaintance appealed to me to help to purchase second-hand Macbook Pro. I warned at once that qualification at me is close to zero, but than I can — I will help. With PC densely I do not work hard years, and I own Mac at the upper teapot level. Fluent search in the phrase "how to check macbook pro" at once led to the exhaustive publication geektimes.ru/post/157969 But inexperience nevertheless brought me.

Declaration:

That is in the declaration the top MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.9 13 model is offered" to Mid-2012 (MD102). Really it MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 13" — 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD appeared Mid-2010 (MC375). The power supply unit was new.

Data from 200 diskettes belonging to the creator of Star Trek are recovered

1 year, 5 months ago

Roddenberri's computer (now does not work) and its diskettes (a photo: DriveSavers)

The DriveSavers company the other day published the press release according to which the staff of the company managed to recover data from about 200 old diskettes. In it there would be nothing remarkable if not that carriers belonged to the creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberri. Diskettes after Roddenberri's death were all the time at his successor. The recovered information was provided to it, in the Network nothing was spread.

Nevertheless, DriveSavers reports that on diskettes there were records of the author, he used them for saving of ideas, scenarios and notes. The volume of each diskette made 160 CBs, and they were used last time somewhere in the eighties the last century.

Tricks of hardware backward compatibility in game consoles

1 year, 5 months ago
Much should deal with old hardware interfaces: for example, it is hereditary commands in the processor or equipment operation modes. Programmers can argue that similar complicates software development, is a problem from the point of view of safety and is banal it is not necessary as the software works worse in the compatibility mode. Engineers tear hair at the next mentioning of need to add support of the old equipment. And they can be understood.

But computers are valuable not the characteristics, but a set of the software which they can start. For this reason in many situations it is so important to provide backward compatibility with the equipment of the previous generation — the developer likes it or not. But sometimes backward compatibility takes bizzare shapes. It is difficult to pick up the correct word: whether it is "crutches", whether quite reasonable solutions.

4 it is better than 3, and 5?

1 year, 6 months ago
a series of the posts made of scans of my old logs; it would be desirable to continue it by a selection of notes about the coming release of Pentium — the first in the history of the processor which had not number, but own name. The recent topic about its twentieth anniversary began with the story: "It was based on architecture of P5 (the word "Pentium" is formed from Greek "penta" — five)..." — but does not concern a question at all: why it was necessary to think out a sophisticated trade name?

One year prior to release of the new processor nobody assumed yet that it will be beaten out from a numerical number of x86 which became usual:

Computerpress 3'92 — A. Borzenko
The integrated circuit of the i80486 microprocessor was announced by Intel firm in 1989 at the Comdex exhibition in Chicago. And though, obviously, we not long already needed to wait for emergence of the new 586th microprocessor, today one of the most powerful universal microprocessors is i80486.

The Intel firm reported that through the distributors who are nowadays existing in the CIS four times more chips are sold, than it was expected earlier. The firm will increase number of the agents in the CIS and will invest in their training and education this year about 2 million dollars. Now at the Moscow office of firm three persons work, soon them there will be about 10.
Distributors of Intel are: MT the Quasar in Kiev, SP Dialog (Moscow), the Center of the Techno (Moscow), SP KAT (Moscow), MT Côme Plus (Zelenograd) and MT Nevis in St. Petersburg. Soon there will be five more distributors. The majority of them trades in Intel chips only for currency.
Having held several marketing seminars for the Soviet partners, the firm found out that retired officers of the Soviet Army are best of all trained in marketing.
This year the firm will translate into Russian and will publish enough a reference media about the products.
Around the world last year the firm received 7700 million dollars of profit.

Format of date and League "Time"

1 year, 6 months ago

Such public organization – League "Time" worked in the 20th years of the last century. In abbreviated form LV therefore members of the organization called themselves elvist.

Elvist as it is simple to guess, time problem, in all its aspects, with the emphasis on economy were engaged (that is clear as worked within the movement NOT unrolled over all country). Fought for saving of time everywhere and in everything: on production, in managerial activity, in life, – at the same time did not avoid questions of representation, display and calculation of time.

The League not for long, from 1923 to 1926 existed, however activity was rough, the network of primary cells on public industries and state offices was unrolled over all country, the Time log was published. Some materials from this periodical are of interest to this day, especially in the light of the computerization which came true for the next century.

Where to descend to the geek at the weekend and holidays in Moscow?

1 year, 6 months ago
Ideal time for drawing up the list of such places is always pleasant to find in Moscow the novel cool place, days off and holidays. Here mine of top tens places, can someone will improve the list in comments:

1. Robofir-tree

If for holidays you need to descend with children somewhere, then the choice is obvious — Roboyolka in hawkers. A DIY performance in which actors and children do turning gray suits from cardboard boxes and foam rubber, and then see a performance about the kingdom of robots where the queen-mother is affected by a virus (as I understood) and she machinates to the princess, as a result that is dumped where it is found by command of robots of suspiciously reminding turtles of the ninjia. It is necessary to see this moment when the whole hall of children shouts "Reboot it", "invert the USB stick" or "do not click on this banner". You feel very old and again to young people at the same time, strange but pleasant feeling. At the end all appears well, all are rescued by a family backup. Well and unexpected appearance of Father Frost, but I did not tell it to you.
