Scientists connected a brain of the paralyzed patient to the Nexus tablet

1 year, 7 months ago
imageThe paralyzed patient with the nervous system affected with Lu Gehrig's illness had an opportunity to communicate with the outside world by means of the neurointerface which tied her brain with the Nexus 9 tablet.

The patient at code number T6 was helped by scientists from Stanford University. The report on progress this week at annual conference on a neurobiology was done by the neuroengineer, doctor Paul Nuyuzhukyan [Paul Nuyujukian].

For the last twenty years thanks to development of computers there were new devices helping the paralyzed patients to communicate with the outside world. Unlike already become classical the devices which are reading out the movements of eyes, new systems tie a brain with electronics directly. The device of the size of a small tablet is implanted into the patient's brain, and special algorithms decrypt the brain waves which are read out by the device from bark.

The patient of T6 agreed to participate two years ago in experiment in which implanted a 100-channel array of electrodes into the section of her brain which is responsible for physical activity. Then it was only the prototype: experimental was focused on letters of the screen keyboard, and the device and managing algorithm had to interpret brain signals. But the interface of the first device was inconvenient, process of work with it – slow. Besides, creation of the wireless interface was the purpose of scientists.

Unboxing Nexus 5X

1 year, 7 months ago
On September 29 the Google company held the presentation of the new version of the Android operating system and provided several new devices among which there were 2 phones — Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. It is difficult to conceal a pricker in a bag therefore by the beginning of the presentation most of the interested people more or less precisely represented as new phones look and that is at them inside. By the end of September I intensively selected several weeks to myself phone on replacement of old Samsung Galaxy SIII. Though there were many worthy candidates (Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4, Sony Xperia Z5, Moto X Pure Edition 2015, etc.) I could not come to the final choice. Therefore met the presentation with considerable attention. After its termination it became clear that Nexus 6P represents a new leader of the company, and here Nexus 5X remained a dark horse. In Nexus 6P everything was pleasant to me, except for one parameter — phone size. I was not ready to "shovel" in, rather small, palms. Therefore, after several hours of the next comparison of different phones, my choice fell on Nexus 5X.
Several weeks later after the official presentation of new phones, on October 19 the Google company began mailing of predzakazany phones, and already two days later I received the copy.

Why I say goodbye to Apple, Google and Microsoft

1 year, 7 months ago

When I began to write articles on technologies in the mid-nineties, the Internet only began to leave in masses. Then I advised readers not to butt in in political and even a little religious fights protection of this or that technological framework. I urged to treat technology as to the tool, and to use it for designated purpose.

So why I type this article on the notebook with GNU/Linux, free OS, but not on the computer under control of Apple or Windows? And why all my phones work with tablets under control of Cyanogenmod — branch of Android, concentrating on a privacy?

First, because on such notebook I can perform the work. To play games. To use the browser. Alternative platforms are already rather good to execute everything that it is necessary for me.

But that is more important – I passed to them as changed the opinion on technology policy. I am sure now that it is necessary to put my instincts and vital values in the used technologies. These values go from simple thought: we lose control over tools which initially promised us equal opportunities in innovations and self-expression. It needs to be stopped.

Control becomes centralized, and the powerful companies and the governments create bottlenecks for our activity. They destroy a privacy, limit a freedom of expression, and lock culture and commerce. Too often we allow them to do it, we sell freedom for convenience, but at the same time the set of any miscellaneous is made without our permission, not to mention our permission. And those tools which I whenever possible try to use are based on values of society, but not corporations.
